Porquê ‘Sinfonia de Plástico’? A resposta é simples.
There is a simple answer. When I had to pick a name for my site, I searched on Google and faced a difficult task: all the good names I thought of were taken. Therefore...
My search took me back to 1980, when one album took over my turntable and remained there several days and, so many years later, it still is one of my musical obsessions. So many spins at 33 revolutions per minute, under a cheap sapphire stylus, added the noisy and debatable appeal of the soundtrack of any movie whose main character has an insatiable craving for crispy chips. One week later I had to squeeze the slim earnings I made as bellboy — and probably that’s why my records were not many and would wear out quickly — and buy a new copy from Mr. Rebordão’s record shop.
‘Video killed the radio star’ was certainly the greatest hit on this record, also thanks to the priceless push of being MTV’s choice to open its inauguration broadcast. It is not included in the shorter single version, but the LP track extends into an instrumental suite named ‘The Polythene Symphonia’. Quite what the band’s keyboard player, Geoffrey Downes, enjoyed doing on later works he composed, both as a solo artist and as a member of other bands.
In English, polythene is one of the most common names for plastic, and the kind that has the strongest presence in our daily lives, i.e. as plastic bags. Scientists prefer to call it polyethylene, a combination of hydrogen and carbon, which has become just as useful as it is pollutant.
Listening to this album, over and over, and finding that further playing does not bore me, made me realise that the ‘sinfonia de plástico’ it inspired would be a good name for this space, which hopefully I will use to share my insights on a world that is getting closer and closer to the Buggles prophetic vision at the beginning of the eighties of the previous century.
Soundwise, 40-something years later I can still recall the words of my friend Zica, then drummer of the hard rock band NZZN: “they may be plastic, but at least they have real drummers who know how to play, instead of drum machines”. Coming from him it sounds the best possible opinion. But it is so much more than that.
Regarding what ‘Sinfonia de Plástico’ is going to be, that is not well defined yet, but it will be dedicated to stuff as common as the age from which it was named after, although from the initial posts one may get the wrong impression that this will be mostly about music. That wouldn't be bad but that is not the case, therefore, if you like what you see, you're welcome any time you wish to come by.
Meanwhile there will be room to talk good stuff about our house. And the beings who live here.
